Dr. D. Michael Cheers teaches visual journalism in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications at San Jose State University. Dr. Cheers also teaches master photo classes in Ghana and South Africa. His research interests include examining the slave dungeons along Cape Coast, Ghana, digitizing the W.E.B. Du Bois photo and documents collection at the Du Bois Institute For Pan African Culture in Accra, Ghana. Dr. Cheers was co-editor and contributing photographer for the best-selling book, “Songs of My People; African Americans, a Self-Portrait.” He also coauthored “Still Grazing: The Musical Journey of Hugh Masekela.” He holds BA and MA degrees in journalism and a MS in African American Studies from Boston University. Dr. Cheers earned his PhD in African Studies and Research from Howard University, in Washington, D.C. He recently completed his certification in Virtual Reality from the School of the New York Times.
